 Welcome!
We are a Karting Club that invented and races extremely affordable 5hp,
Single Wheel Drive "Gas stocker" karts (a homemade hybrid
mix between a WKA racing kart and a conventional yard kart) for a Points
championship every summer at Galletta's
Greenhouse Karting Speedway
and other local tracks upon invitation. Our unique and affordable dirt
carting class can race on both conventional carting tracks or backyard
speedways. We also record weekly local dirt karting classes in the Oswego
area in addition to our own and make them available affordably on DVD!
Join us racing by either building
your own or renting one of our team backup karts. You can also just
watch in person, or by buying our DVDs.
Please read on and learn more about our extremely affordable brand of
highly competitive racing!
Race competitively (not just last place) for a few hundred dollars per
year!
THE GALLETTA'S KARTING SPEEDWAY ALL-TIME POINT STANDINGS: Through the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
and 2009 seasons (up to
11/8/2009).
Although Galletta's Backyard Karting Speedway
has held races since the early 1990s, our "official" points series begins
from
2000-up.

Key:
* = Includes a "tie" for Feature Win.
< = Includes "Non-Winner's Only" Feature Win.
^ = Includes rain-shortened Feature Win.
> = Includes a 1/2-lap shortened Feature Win.
Red = Majority of races in larger/illegal/since
outlawed "OHV" motor + mods. All others in FH 5hp.
Pictures = Raced in at least one race recently, or a videotaped
event (like the Galletta's Klassic).
Profiles = Regular Drivers and Klassic Competitors have driver
profiles (Click on highlighted pictures).
# = Honorary points for racing in the 1990s.
All-Time Wins-Only Listing is found
here.
Between 2000-2009,
approximately:
(1) 201 different drivers have raced in 228 features races (between
30-200 laps each).
(2) Out of those, 28 different drivers have won out of 228 features
at Galletta's.
|
This
list is complete between 2000-09, but it does not contain a few notables:
1. The 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1999 points seasons are currently
not digitally filed and not included for the time being. However, with
only having 3-4 karts, only Matt, Chris, and Wes Stevens scored wins
during these
seasons, and only an occasional friend or relative joining us for
a few races here and there, their inclusion is not as important as the
2000-and-up series as above where we had more karts and drivers on track
and visitors actually winning (Chris, Matt and Wes were not beat all
through the 1990s and only defeated each other). If the stats to the
1990s (all on a notepad in a box somewhere) are are found, they will
be added in at a later date, but will only increase the founding trio's
point and win totals and have little-to-no effect on the visitor's standings,
as we had very few visitors racing in very many races before 2000.
2.
This list does not include any Oswego Kartway "Gas Stocker"
or "Super/Racing Yard Kart" events. Those are a
separate points series and are listed on this page, and are not
included on the Galletta's Backyard Karting Speedway Points Series largely
because we were forced by track operators to abandon our rule set and
race against motors that are illegal under Galletta's rules (6.5hp OHV
motors with racing mods, sometimes including Animal takeout parts; no
Galletta's flathead was allowed racing mods between 1990-2007, so why
should the "Outlaw" OHVs? And no WKA Raptor Flathead races
a WKA Animal OHV, so, again, why are we forced to? Dunno', why
not ask them?
Maybe they'll tell you, because they won't tell us; other than things
like, "Matt wins too much" and "Chris is a
sniveling mommies boy." Real professional track operator
there, huh? Race anywhere but that Godforsaken place!).
3.
Some names could not be digitally transferred correctly or completely,
as some were signed so illegibly, that they could not be read. Some
of these cases have incomplete names or nicknames only. In rare occasions,
some names were not recorded at all. If you are aware of any errors,
or you are one of these people with missing, misspelled, or incomplete
names, please contact me and I'll repair it as soon as possible. Either
way, unless you crashed purposefully and then asked for your kart usage
money back (you know who you are), or do not want to follow our already
easy-to-follow and flexible (for heavier guys) rules, we want most of
the above (probably 98-99% of you in the above list) racing with us,
so come on back!
4.
Since races are often longer nowadays (because the track is smoother
and the karts are sturdier and break down less than 1995-2005), newer
drivers (2005-up) often have higher points-per-race averages than older
drivers. This means that although they may have less races, they have
ran more laps, as the Galletta's Points Scoring System rewards more
points for more laps per race. The bigger the race, the more points
to be scored per race. If you want to score well , then you come often,
but if you only come to one a year, come to the Annual September Saturday
's Galletta's
Klassic Championship, which is the giant 200-lap points-earner that
decides the annual Track Champion and finalizes the Summer series (Post-Klassic
Fall series only count as "All-Time Bonus Points" and not
as annual points). Still, the statistic of "Win Percentage"
is most telling of how well a driver has done in their career, because
total points is usually how many races they've raced, and points-per-race
is how "big" the races were that they were in, but win percentage
(with equal motors and weights) is almost always the constant determining
factor on how well a driver has been racing. However, that first win
is usually the hardest to get, and once a driver gets that first one,
they can sometimes get them in bunches.
Engine
rules:
1993-2004:

the Galletta's Karting Speedway and points system from 1993-2004 was

motor that runs on gasoline; all racing parts and alterations
were forbidden. All chassis are Single-Wheel Drive, clockwise-turning
racing karts. No internal or external racing modifications, nor shaved
heads, but motors were allowed to be bored when sufficiently worn and
too much compression has been lost. 2005-up allowed hand shaved/milled
heads (see below changes and controversy).
2005-08:
Since the middle of the
2005 season, rules had to be altered each season to compete against
drivers who brought larger 6.5hp OHV motors and entered our races, sometimes
forcefully by other track operators (as seen on our message boards).
For this reason, we allowed shaved heads ONLY from 2005-2007, but in
2008 we had to expand our rules to allow racing rods and some "non-slapper"
race cams due to Oswego Kartway operator's forced "cheat or get
beat" philosophy. In late 2008, after banning the Gas Stock Animal
OHV motor from our races entirely (to keep costs down and competition
equal and friendly) we instituted a minimum weight requirement (drivers
under 165 lbs. MUST be weighed down).
2009-up: The
legal motors are all 5hp Briggs & Stratton Flathead, carburetors
are all 1990's style stock gas carbs, all cams are non-slapper cams
(example: Dyno 94-SS is the standard for all but the heaviest competitors
[usually anybody over 220 lbs.], who are allowed a higher-lift cam,
but it must be told to and approved by all the other regular drivers),
and shaved heads are allowed. Mufflers must be on all exhaust for sound
reduction. All motors should have stock B&S "Fun Power"
type mufflers, unless a driver is over 200 lbs., which in that case
is allowed a header (Must still have a muffler attached). All drivers
must have a minimum weight requirement, and drivers over that weight
limit are allowed the bigger cam and racing headers. Now, since we no
longer race at the irresponsibly-run Oswego Kartway since the end of
the 2008 season, we can now run agreed-upon motor rules once again,
and will no longer deal with motor cheats (people who do not stick to
agreed-to motor rules) or track operators who cooperate with them (then
banned our class and acted like an immature child towards us when we
refused to allow people with larger, heavily [illegally] modified engines
to run with us anymore). The entire story, including what is and isn't
legal in a Galletta's
Gas Stocker Kart event are found on the
newly updated Galletta's Go-Kart Racing Club's rules page. Any motor
other than a Galletta's-type Gas Flathead motor can run with us on a
trial basis, but cannot interfere with the points and wins of the karts
using approved, Galletta's-modified 5hp Gas Flathead regulation motors.
In other words, they can earn points, but their placement will not affect
any other regulation motor kart's placement. They will be scored as
if the non-regulation motor wasn't ever there.
HANDICAP POINTS SYSTEM AT GALLETTA'S BACKYARD SPEEDWAY:
All of our karts are equalized, and we handicap those who need the
most help in order to compete. So why are some people seemingly so much
faster than others if all the karts are equal? Experience racing is
the key. Do not let losers who have tried a couple of times, failed,
and give up tell you that we rig or fix our races at Galletta's (you
know who you are). It is the exact opposite. Regular drivers will tell
you, the more experience is usually how the races go. How? We handicap
that karts via the following ways:
(a) Handicapped Start: Winless and low-scoring regular drivers
are handicapped to start in the front via inverting the (1st priority)
wins and (2nd priority) points-per-race averages per that season.
This ensures that the race is fairly balanced, where the higher-scoring
drivers have to earn their positioning and wins, and the lesser-experienced
drivers have a better chance of winning by holding off the more skilled,
savvy, and successful drivers. Beginners always start in the
rear until they prove they can race in a solid line, and not be a hazard
by spinning out or crashing into other drivers, which is usually after
two to four races. One exception to this rule is our 200-Lap Klassic
Championship, where your starting position depends on your fastest time
trial out of two laps. Another is on Twin-30 Nights, where the first
feature is handicapped traditionally, but the second is inverted from
the finish of the 1st feature except for newbies in back.
(b) Handicap horsepower for heavier drivers: The heavier drivers
are actually allowed more horsepower to compensate, provided that it
is the same motor. Motor is our determining factor, and setups can be
experimented with to get the closest possible speeds, and a different
motor means a different class on our track. Anybody over 200 lbs. is
allowed a certain amount of extra horsepower via a bigger cam, headers,
lighter chassis, and so on and so forth. This rule is flexible and based
on a consensus agreement between all active regular competitors. What
is and isn't allowed is based on what all the drivers agree to, and
the bigger drivers are allowed the most extras. Drivers over 250 lbs.
may even be allowed a raptor carb on an experimental basis. Gas and
flathead are the must-be is the constants, otherwise you are a different
class.
(c) Weighing down lighter drivers: The lightest drivers are weighed
down to help heavier drivers compete. The average weight of our drivers
overall has traditionally been between 150-200 lbs. range, with the
highest concentration being between 165-180 lbs.. Anyone lighter than
165 lbs. will have additional weight placed on their karts. If a driver
is under 200 lbs., they cannot use a race header,
nor a cam with more power than a Dyno 94-SS.
(d) 1st-Timer Rookies are given more track time than veterans:
Beginners (also called "newbies", "rookies", or
"The spin-or-wreck-prone person") are given pre-race practice
and rookie heat and/or feature races to help them get the hang of it,
get them up to speed, and earn bonus points that will help offset the
wide gulf between veterans. These alone, however, only get people started,
and the only way to really get up to speed and have the ability to compete
for wins is to go into the thick of the action and race with the veterans,
watch how they take the karts around the track. The learning curve is
short for some (1-2 races for people with prior race experience), to
long (2-3 years for some), and never for others (well, OK, maybe just
1 or 2 people raced for years and never got the hang of it enough to
get one feature win. You can guess by looking at the stats above). The
problem is, many get scared or discouraged when in their first few races
they can't keep up. It takes learning the groove and how the kart handles.
An experienced vet can win a feature in any of the Galletta's Team Karts,
and all of the karts have won many races. The more you race, the better
you'll become, and the more fun you will have.
This
makes it so the following factors determine how well someone generally
does in our events:
Racing experience with a 1-WD kart, and then general racing experience
in any other type of racing vehicle helps speed the learning curve.
This means the more you race our karts, the better you will become,
and people with prior racing experience often pick up the basics and
compete far quicker than people who never competitively raced anything
before. We don't have cheats (and it is funny to watch cheats hate us
because we won't let them, as they are always the ones throwing temper
tantrums after losing one or two races and never coming back) because
(a) you can't outspend your opponent - our karts are inexpensive, effective
on our track surface, and (b) big-money motor parts and cheap tricks
learned via WKA-cheating are not effective when in our 1-WD, loose dirt
track & clockwise form of racing, as the gas flathead with a gas
stock carb equalizes top speed very well. Galletta's also has a generally
friendly and fun atmosphere conclusive to friends-and-family-having-fun
racing, and because of our honesty and willingness to all obey the consensus
rules, everybody has a great chance to win in a very close race on most
occasions. You will often not find that on organized WKA-type karting
tracks, as we have found that it is mostly parents or young adults trying
to use karting as a steppingstone to bigger forms of racing, and that
leads to cheating, bad attitudes, fights, and big-spenders looking out
for only themselves and limited only to the amount of money in their
pockets or friendship with biased track operators who only selectively
enforce rules. The general rule on such tracks is butt-kissing the right
people and spending money. That is NOT how we run it at Galletta's.
Here, the general rule is: The more you race, the higher you will finish
and the more wins you will earn. We all help each other and all obey
the rules, and experience and track time is the ultimate key to success
at Galletta's. Our most-experienced veterans, and Matt Stevens himself
will hook you up with a kart as fast or even faster as his (just ask
our regulars! They know, because Matt has often helped them beat him!
There's no higher determining factor than that!). Look at all of the
top-scorers! They all race more than the guys at the bottom of the list,
and have more wins and points-per-race. There are no 1-hit-wonders at
Galletta's. Success is earned via experience and track time. That's
it. You can't do that on other tracks, especially in our closest dirt
track locally -been there, done that. So race and race often! That is
the key to competing at Galletta's! It is why we are so proud of our
racing! It may be affordable, but it is also equal, fair, and FUN!
Also, here is is the...

STANDINGS as
well! Several of the above drivers (and a few different ones) join us
at Oswego Speedway's
Dirt Oval
for a separate points series. There you can watch us race on the same
track as WKA flat karts, Champ Karts, and even open karts and put on
just as good (and often bigger) of a show for much less in cost, and
in the past even race bigger motors and fare very well against them.
What is a Galletta's Go-Kart, AKA a Single-Wheel-Drive "Gas Stocker" Kart? Read here!
The
Galletta's Go-Karting Club was founded by brothers Matt and Chris Stevens
in the early 1990s
when they modified yard karts for racing purposes. They are the inventors
of "clockwise 5hp flathead gas stocker kart" racing, and have
a 14-kart race team that includes several backup karts available to
be rented and raced at Galletta's Backyard Karting Speedway (and other
tracks that invite us) all summer. Invented with specifically "Galletta's
gas stocker flathead motor" rules so that a person doesn't have
to spend thousands of dollars to race in extremely competitive racing
events, the class grows in talent and competition every single year.
Join us by building your own kart for around $500 or rent one of our
team karts on Summer Thursdays or Summer Sundays in Oswego, NY!

Backyard Karting Speedway/ Kartway
Due to the
fact that the karts are so affordable and the oldest veterans have been
racing for nearly two decades, it is one of the most difficult karting
divisions to win at, but yet you can be instantly competitive for just
a couple hundred dollars IF you're a good driver. You can't outspend
your opponent due to our gas-powered stock-only rule, so you must out-race
them and out-setup them. In fact, nobody has ever defeated Matt &
Chris in the open challenge: race a stock 5hp flathead and stop them
from scoring 1st & 2nd in a points season. Though hundreds of people
have tried in hundreds of races since the early 1990s, Chris and Matt
have scored 1 & 2 every year. But it's not just them you have to
race. Our regular drivers are all talented and experienced, and can
beat anybody who wants to give it a try. You can prove your skills against
the winningest karters in the local area AND you won't even have to
spend a lot of money to get started! We
dare you to try! Make your own or rent one of our racing team karts.
